Day 3 Update

Well good news and other news. The twitters are doing well for the most part. They are on the borderline for the jaundice test, so they may be going under the lights this afternoon. They have lost a little weight as expected but it is still less than 10% which is acceptable. I was able to pump enough milk for them to get a taste and they gobbled it right up. And we got to hold them during the feeding. Considering it was the first time we have been able to since right after they were born, we left very happy. The biggest concern is that they both experienced an Apnea episode this morning. This buys them an automatic 5 day extension in the NICU. The nurses commented that they did it one after the other as if they planned. Ella had another episode while we were in there but it was pretty minor.

While we are concerned and sad that they are going to be staying we would much rather have them under 24/7 supervision and monitoring in case it happens again. It was a little scary having Ella do that while Brandon was holding her. We completely understand and support the nurses and dr's decision, but of course we still wish they could come home with us.

They are going to let us hold them more and co-bed them in the nursery if they are free of all monitoring and IV equipment. We are already working out our visitation schedule for when we leave tomorrow.

Oh yeah...I get to leave tomorrow! It will be so nice to be back in my own bed. I have honestly bounced back from this c-section faster than I thought. I am feeling pretty good and getting around pretty well. Brandon is still waiting on me without hesitation.

Here are a few pics from today. I will keep you posted daily.

The NICU staff made signs for the little ones. Fits our sock monkey theme pretty well.

Snoozing Rhino Boy. Notice his IV in his head. He kept pulling it out of his arm.

Ahhh, guys, it's like us with Sam all over again. Seriously! First it was fluid in the lungs, then "pneumonia" (which turned out to not be the case, but they thought it was for 48 hours) then under the lights with severe jaundice. They let him come home with us after a week, but he was on a sleep monitor for the apnea, and it went off a few times - very scary.

I totally know what you are going through - of course, without a c-section recovery, and with only 1, but other than that...yeah, the same right? :)

Hugs and before you know it, Beck and Ella will be home and driving you crazy, keeping you up at night. Look at my active athlete Sam - can you believe HE was my sickly premature one?

hey...who's that extremely capable (and highly attractive) person holding Beck's feeding tube? ;)

glad to hear that your visit went well...scary about Ella's apnea episode while in Brandon's arms! Eeek!

SOOO glad you have folks around you with experience with all of this...like Tracey!

Lots of love, keep us all updated! We are loving all the info!

So sad you had to be discharged without them, but happy they are being well tended to.

I've the done the NICU thing and while my experience was very different, I will be glad to help with any questions you may have. I was going to say it wasn't that long ago, but it's past 18 months that we were discharged! Man, it's gone fast! I can't imagine the machines or terms have changed too much tough, so call or email if you need me. I'm finally out of the flu fog that I've been in since Tuesday.

Love the pictures! I hate that you're getting to know about tube feeding but they'll be doing the real thing soon and if they don't for awhile, tubes are cool too! Audrey thinks so.

Hugs,
Jenn

What beautiful pictures and Debbie you look fantastic!

I know what you are going through having had my two babies start out in the NICU, as well. Before you know it, the babies will be at home in your arms and the NICU will be a distant memory. I PROMISE!
