*disclaimer- if something doesn't make sense or there are major typos, please remember they are due to extreme sleep deprivation. I apologize in advance. :)
Well, we just went in for our two month check up (can you believe its been 2 months?) yesterday. And we are hopefully on our way to less crying.
The babies have been crying pretty much all night every night from 5-11 and Ella continues to cry during the day as well. This has been going on for the last 6 weeks, and it just keeps on getting worse.
The last two weeks in particular have really sucked! So our sleep deprived brains started wondering if it was anything else other than just colicky fussy babies. A few weeks ago I started trying to cut out foods that I thought may be upsetting their tummies but it didn't change anything.
We also give them one bottle of formula a night and when we switched from milk based formula to soy they did improve a little bit. But the crying continued.
So then I thought maybe they just aren't getting enough sleep and are over tired (I really didn't think about the fact that they sleep about 19 hours a day...sleep deprived!), so I started putting them to bed earlier. Which luckily at least got them to sleep earlier which meant less crying, but then it meant that they woke up sooner and more often all.night.long!
So here I sit sleep deprived and nursing all day long just trying to get these babies to stop crying and to go back to sleep. And then they started to refuse to even comfort nurse. We rocked, swaddled, shushed, used white noise, sang, danced, walked with them in the sling and baby bjorn, went outside, went for car rides, and anything else we could think of. Everything worked for about 5 minutes or on the odd rare occasion that it put them to sleep. So basically they would sleep, eat , poop , and cry with maybe 10 minutes a day of being what we thought a baby should be like. It got so bad that we would just have to let them cry in their beds and just walk away for 10 minutes. This broke my heart, I really hate to hear them crying.
But a person can only take so much. I would literally count down the minutes until Brandon got home at night to help out. I am so lucky to have him!! He is the best dad ever, I definitely have a hubby that knows how to pitch in and really do half of the work with these babies!! We are a good team!
As I was sitting there trying to formulate a complete thought, a light bulb went off, maybe its reflux? So when we went to the dr. we told him about the crying and everything else and really thought he was going to tell us "its just colic, they'll grow out of it" but thank goodness he had another plan of action for us! Love this man!! He gave us some zantac for the reflux, took us off of the soy formula and put us on a milk and soy free formula (with lots of free samples!), and told me to cut all milk and soy out of my diet.
So after 24 hours on the zantac we are already starting to see some changes. The babies have periods during the day that they will just sit and observe without crying. I can actually calm Ella by putting her in the bouncy seat. We are still have periods of screaming but we went from about 4-5 hours of screaming a day to 1-2 hours. That is a major improvement. I've read that it can take up to two weeks to take full effect, but it is already looking better. I still haven't cut the milk and soy out of my diet, because I wanted to see if the zantac worked before I went through all of that.
But the craziest thing happened last night, I fed the babies, swaddled them up and put them to bed while they were still awake and they went right to sleep! You don't understand, this NEVER happens. And guess what? Tonight same deal. I'm pinching myself to see if this is a dream (which would mean I was getting sleep). And last night they slept from 11-3:30 and then were up again at 6. Oh wait that was just Beck....Ella was up at 2 and then 4 again but its still better than my usual 1-2 hour periods of sleep at night. This was so nice!! So cross you fingers and send sleepy thoughts that this happens again. :)
So at 2 months Beck is 11lbs 6.5 ozs and 22 1/2" Which puts him in the 50% for weight and 25% for height and this isn't even for their adjusted age!! Ella on the other hand is still my petite flower. She is 8lbs 14ozs and 20" which puts her in the 3-5% for weight and <3% for her height. This is also the non adjusted age percentages. So Ella is right on track for a 36 week preemie and Beck is way ahead of the curve. I was so happy to see that they were doing so well. They are obviously getting enough breast milk!!!

Yay for sleeping babies!!!!
I've only met you once, nearly 3 years ago, but I love reading your blog. All of your children are absolutely beautiful. You are one blessed woman!
I hope the medicine helps soon. I have a 4 year old that had reflux but never fussed. He was on Zantac too. I also have a 7 month old that screamed bloody murder from 5-8 every night (starting at 4 months). After about 2 weeks of this, he was put on Zantac. It took about 3 days (although the dr. said it could take up to two weeks) and then it stopped. He turned in to the happiest baby! Since my first never fussed with reflux, I didn't even think about that being the problem. Hope this works for you, too!
Your Children are Beautiful :o)
Be Careful with Zantac as it is VERY weight sensitive & has a habit of only working for a few days :o(
My DD had reflux too & Zantac stopped working on day 3 & BEWARE of Constipation *Ekk* Your best bet is preavacid or another solutab :? Glad there is less cring going on *HugS* Wishing You ALl The Best *Hugs*
Hoping for more quiet time. This too shall pass....
I second the business about zantac being extremely weight sensitive, and many doctors tend to prescribe the lower end of the "range" of acceptable amount by weight. I think that at under 10 lbs, you probably cannot give prevacid solutabs, but that did work for my 2nd reflux baby, very well! She was exclusively breastfed with no formula and no dietary changes after the medication. My first had undiagnosed reflux and she screamed so much and eventually outgrew it. My 2nd was off the meds at 6 months. When they start sitting up on their own, it helps out a lot, but both still spit up a bit up to a year, maybe beyond. It was mostly "silent" reflux.
You can find a lot out at infantreflux.org and there are two yahoo groups, infantreflux and breastfeedingreflux that are great sources of information. Of course, who with twin newborns has the time to read e-mails? LOL
Nodding.
Yup, been there, done that. 2 Zantac babies here. Bailey probably SHOULD have been on it, but that was before they were widely prescribing it, I think. I was also fortunate in that soy formula helped a lot.
Hang in there!
Hello there, I've had two reflux babes myself. My first responded to zantac and for my second the prevacid melt tabs were a miracle. Truly helped immediately. With both I tried the milk/soy free diet and let me tell ya, it's really hard. Did you know that there are like 9 different ways that they can lable milk in products? There's a ton of good info on kellymom.com if you decide you need to do it. The diet is just basically a lot of chicken, turkey and fruits and veggies. (did you know that even beef has trace amounts of lactose and milk proteins in it? No clue here!)
Good luck!!!!
Hi Deb -
I somewhat stumbled onto your blog from Jenn Miller's site and can't stop coming back to check in! I am also a mother of twins and everything you are experiencing is oh so familiar and brings back such memories! Or at least what I can remember from those crazy, sleep deprived days. My husband also worked in the restauarant biz which meant a lot of alone time with the babies (and my older pre-schooler)so I definitely can relate! We too had the reflux issues and I think we tried every single formula on the market...finally landed on Good Start for what it is worth. Easier on the digestion if I remember. Here's what I can say...it WILL get better. Every stage of having two kiddos the same age has its own challenges (wait until they are screaming toddlers!) but nothing is as hard as the beginning. Well, if you need anything at all from someone who has been in your shoes, please don't hesitate to reach out to me. Your babes are beautiful by the way! Natalie :)
Debbie~
I love the new pictures. Ella looks so little in her bumbo. We haven't tried ours yet.
I'm sorry to hear you've been having so many sleepless nights! I hope the zantac helps. Aaron is also on zantac, as was our oldest. It seemed to help!
We also ordered a miracle blanket swaddler for Aaron as he wasn't sleeping as long as McKenna. He still doesn't sleep as much as her, but he does seem to sleep better.
I'll be keeping you guys in my thoughts!! Hopefully some day we'll come through TX and get to meet you guys!!
Zantac CHNAGED our lives too-- yeah for meds!! Glad it is working and you are finally getting a little sleep and are able to enjoy the babies more! Summer
